masterchef intercultural competency
This activity worked great with my 16, 17, and 18 year old students in Spain. Why? Spain has a version of Masterchef that is very popular (at least right now in 2019). Students have a basic understanding of how the show works and most have seen at least an episode.
We watch the American trailer, then the Australian trailer twice. I write on the board "American" "Australian" and "Spain"/"Colombian". We brainstorm words that reflect the trailers and compare them. This is also a good opportunity to come up with synonyms. - you can create a venn diagram!
Follow up questions after brainstorming:
Why do you think the approaches to the same program are different?
Which of the two trailers do you prefer? Why?
How do you think Australia regards the American version?
What do you think influences this perspective?
What cultural implications are presented in these trailers?
If Colombia (your country) created a show, do you think the trailer would be different?
